Ruth lives in Edinburgh where she teaches and researches AI and robotics. Her poems are widely published: in magazines (eg. The North, Butcher’s Dog, Southbank Poetry); on-line (eg. Ink, Sweat and Tears); and in anthologies (eg. Scotia Extremis; Mancunian Way). My background in science and technology is reflected in many poem, whether as central topics in their own right or as metaphors. I’ve written about cosmology, about Marie Curie, Alan Turing, and other scientists and engineers, about love as quantum mechanics and sex as flammable metals. About robots, and in the voice of a robot.

I’ve been a political activist all my adult life, through hopeful and unhopeful times: I’ve written about both, whether the young women who demonstrated against Trump or the need to hold on to hope when things look grim. My piece More Resolute, written fro the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign, appeared on their website, and Belshazzar;’s Feast in the Morning Star on the occasion of the 2019 UK General Election.

I really enjoy working on projects with other poets and writers.
- Greg Michaelson and I wrote a piece on Science and Intuition in 2008 for Textualities which I performed with Sarah the Poetic Robot in 2012.
- I took part in the 2012 Take Tea with Turing project, run by Viccy Adams.
- Beth McDonough and I followed up a prize in the Compound Competition at the 2015 Cheltenham Festival with a joint pamphlet, Handfast, in 2016.
- I also took part in the Uncanny Project led by Pippa Goldschmidt in 2019 which resulted in the 2020 Luna publication Uncanny Bodies.
- I have worked with the Scottish PEN Writers for Peace committee, coordinate the Scottish PEN Women’s Committee and was part of Poetic Offensive at the 2021 Paisley Book Festival.
- Equinox is a Fantasy/SF novel set in Scotland, written with Greg Michaelson, published by Stairwell Books of York in 2023
- I was also one of four authors of a University satire Inside the Department of Applied Meta-Magical Anthropology (Inside DAMMA) published by Read Direct Fiction in 2023

Some of my feeings and ideas about poetry were well captured in a 2018 interview in The Wombwell Rainbow. For me, poetry is about communication, so I love reading, preferably live, but during the Covid pandemic, necessarily online, including the launch of my pamphlet Pretty in Pink.
